Have you submitted your petition for graduation?

This year’s Scottsdale Community College graduation commencement ceremony is May 14 and the deadline to petition for graduation is March 5, only a couple of days away.

Fortunately, there is no need to panic. SCC’s advisement office will help you meet the deadline. You can make an appointment or come in on a walk-in basis. Advisers help you file but come prepared.

For your advisement meeting you will need to bring a 2009-2010 official Maricopa County Community College District advisement Check Sheet, downloadable from SCC’s website at plone.scottsdalecc.edu /advisement/2009-2010-check-sheets.

If you need help you can have an adviser fill it out with you.

An adviser will help verify if credits satisfy graduation requirements.

If you have the check sheet filled out from last semester, “We can just go through and double check. It just helps facilitate the process,” adviser D’Vette Alonzo said.

“We’re just going to look it over and finish it up and turn it in,” said Michael Cornelius, director of Advisement.

When an adviser signs the graduation petition, the Advisement Office will submit it to Admissions and Records for further evaluation. A student should come into advisement for graduation petition as early as possible.

In fact, “students can petition anytime; there’s not a time where we don’t take a graduation petition,” Cornelius said.

Just meet the conditions or you will have to wait until next semester to receive your diploma.

Pass a class? No worries. You can still participate in the graduation ceremony as long as you are registered for classes next semester.

Your diploma will arrive after you finish your final semester of classes successfully.

The important things are:
•apply for graduation as soon as you’re registered for you final classes,
•don’t procrastinate, and
•check those check sheets. They’re provided to help you monitor your progress.

If you transferred to SCC, there will be a couple of other necessary steps. If you transferred from within MCCCD, sign into you my.maricopa.edu account and request an official transcript.

It’s free of charge and best of all it can be done overnight.

If you transferred from outside of the MCCCD, official transcripts from that college or university need to be sent directly to SCC’s Admissions and Records.

Most schools will charge you a small fee.  It will take some time but it’s not hard to do. If you have questions, consult your adviser.

Don’t wait until the deadline to come into the advisement office, Alonzo advised.
The lines will be long and “that could be a real stressful day because everyone is coming in at once,” Alonzo said.

Diplomas for those who have completed their courses of study are expected to arrive by mail at the end of June.
