This year's Artichoke basketball teams’ expectations are high because of their hard work, determination and love for the game. Former Artichoke Ryan Zapata commented on what to expect from the Artichoke basketball teams this year: Playoff Championship.

The SCC basketball coaches’ describe their teams as a group of athletes filled with great personality, talent and quickness. It is those traits that they hope will lead to a promising season. Both men and women's teams are ready to do whatever it takes to become successful this year.

“If it feels easy everybody would do it. We got to love the game to get up at 5a.m. in the morning to practice,” said Elias Lewis a freshman on the men’s basketball team.

Sophomore Charnay Mothershed, who plays guard for the women’s Artichoke team, admits the women’s basketball team also runs constantly.

“Running is a form of discipline, because when it comes to game-time we know we have to do it right,” said Mothershed.

The coaches want to see their teams succeed in the future, which is why they push the players hard in practice. They see a lot of potential and key characteristics in their players.

“I expect us to compete every night and continue to grow as a team throughout the whole season. We are a good group of veterans. Some guys have been here for awhile and the newcomers bring talent. Everyone is trying to do what it is to be successful,” said men’s head coach Paul Eberhardt.

On the women’s side, head coach Bike Medder has a similar desire for players.
“I have a high expectation this year. The Goal set is to do well, be in the top three," said Medder. “The two returning sophomores show leadership with their actions, and the freshman girls are a great group personality wise."

The year kicks off Nov. 12 for both teams. The men will host Team Mars at SCC while the Lady Artichokes have an away game against Luke Air Force Base.
