New popularity in football

Women in America have been known for hating the past time of watching football, but according to many, the popularity of watching both professional and college football has increased.

  

In a poll taken by MSNBC.com, 30 percent of women chose to watch the National Football League, 14 percent chose Major League Baseball, and 10 percent chose college football. Football is a competitive sport, with a very passionate fan base. Women who enjoy watching the game of football may enjoy it for rivalry, to show team spirit and most importantly, to bond with their fellow enthusiasts.

  

Some women watch football because of the relationships it creates. Arielle Sanders said, “Guys love to watch a good football game. Women on the other hand enjoy being around their friends and their man…women enjoy the togetherness of everyone gathering for a great time.”

 

According to the NFL, 45 million women watch Sunday Night Football and tune into other nights of football, and over 375,000 attend countrywide professional football games each weekend. To increase and encourage women’s participation in football, the NFL has focused on making appealing apparel for women and just in 2009 alone, sales estimated at $4 billion.

 

Danielle Anderson, of Cave Creek doesn’t prefer sitting on the couch on a beautiful Saturday unless it’s a special event such as the Super Bowl or Rose Bowl. “I get really excited to pick a team, which is usually the opposite as my husband, and cheer them on!”

 

The football season runs for 17 weeks, allowing Chris Roberts, a student at Arizona State University, to watch his favorite teams. “All I need is a cold beer in my hand, munchies and a girl by my side who doesn’t always want to change the channel,” said Roberts.

 

By looking at the numbers as a reference, football has no longer been directed to men, but those who promote the sport have switched gears and focused on women’s support and passion as well. The majority of women who watch football ultimately enjoy the “togetherness” the games allow, the gathering of friends and the thrilling competition the game brings to an afternoon on game day.
