New construction around SCC has made students, faculty and staff curious as they have been rerouted to avoid dirt piles and traffic cones.

The bulk of the construction is taking place at the parking lot of the Learning Center Building and an area east of the southeast parking lot.

Over Spring Break, SCC staff installed a new left turn lane to the first entrance of the school on Chaparral Road. In the near future Chaparral Road will be widened for an extra lane, as well as a traffic light at the main entrance of the college.

A two-lane loop road will soon replace the connection road between the main parking lot and the H parking lot. This loop road will start at entrance four and feed out into Parking lot H.

In 2004 voters approved of a bond where the Maricopa County Community College District was awarded a $951 million bond for school improvements. SCC's share of the bond money was $60 million, and $35 million is budgeted for construction.

Carl Couch, vice president of Administrative Services, says that SCC will be undergoing vast upgrades.

These upgrades include a new Physical Science Building, two new courtyards specifically for the Geology department and improved traffic lanes within the school parking lots.

The new Physical Science Building will include four biomes as a part of an outdoor learning center.

The master plan for all of the upgrades to SCC was completed in 2002. Although $35 million was budgeted for construction, the recent rise in oil prices is making project completion and staying on budget more difficult.

Most of the materials used to construct a building are made with petrol - dry wall, asphalt and PVC piping.

Jack Van Cleave, director of Facilities, is proud of the work planned and cannot wait for the completion.

Van Cleave believes that the planned upgrades to SCC will make it not only visually appealing to the eye, but will improve the attitude of students and their eagerness to learn and get the most out of their education at SCC.

"It is something we all can be proud of," said Van Cleave.

The loop road project is scheduled to be complete at the end of summer 2008 and the bulk of the new buildings and faculties will be complete sometime in 2012.
