Throughout Scottsdale Community College, students anf facutly will be recognized at the annual award ceremonies.

At 7 p.m., on April 23, the Excellence under the Stars Award Ceremony will take place at Scottsdale Community College on the grassy area between the Student Center and the Performing Arts Center (PAC).

"Student Life and Leadership is responsible for the ceremony," said Rebecca Bradley, director of Student Life and Leadership.

For the eighth year in a row, faculty and staff will recognize students for their leadership throughout SCC and the Valley. Students will also be recognized for their academic achievements.

"SCC has been presenting these awards in this capacity-at least as long as I have been here in this role, which is eight years now," said Bradley. "At some point prior to that, the awards were given out at a luncheon."

Seven different categories will be awarded during the ceremony. The General Stars Award is geared towards any student who gets nominated.

A couple of the specialty awards are The Vortex and the Dr. Arthur W. DeCabooter Silver Artichoke Award.

"The Vortex is for a student who entered a creative writing contest that was sponsored by our English Department and chaired by faculty-member Sandra DesJardins," said Bradley. "The Silver Artichoke was created by Student Leadership Forum in honor of Dr. DeCabooter."

A college-wide committee assists Life and Leadership Program with the arrangements for the ceremony. On the committee there are seven faculty members: Dan Combellick, Cyndi DeBoer, Donna Guhse, Therese Tendick, Gerald Thurman, Cory Vanderpoel and John Weser.

"I've been involved at least four years," said Therese Tendick, director of the International Education Program. "It's a fun day and it is a great opportunity for us to recognize some very hard-working students."

A luncheon will also be held on April 16 at the Phoenix zoo, to recognize the hard work that Patricia Medeiros, Language and Communicaion devision chair, has put into SCC since 1989., and award her The Woman of Distinction Award.

"I was very surprised and very honored," said Medeiros. "The previous winners are truly distinguished women, and it's a tremendous honor to be placed in the same category with them."

Several women from all Maricopa Colleges will be awarded at the event for their dedication.

At SCC for almost two decades, Medeiros has kept busy at the college. As well as teaching English she served as the English Department chair for five years. Currently she is the division chair of Language and Communication and an assessment coordinator for SCC

Last year she was one of the self-study coordinator to prepare SCC for the accreditation review. If that wasn't enough, she served as one of the tri-chairs of the Presidential Search Committee.
