Summary :
Henry Wickenburg established vulture Mine in 1863 and it was one of the largest gold producing mines in Arizona, but due to thieves and scandals the mine never able to pay its investors. The mine was closed in 1942.
A self-guided tour is begins at the Assay Office, which was made from the ore from the mine. Some say its walls contain $800,000 in gold and silver.
Inside the building is were living quarters on one end. Antique bottles sit out in the wind and rain. An old sewing machine sits out ready for some clothes to be mended. Tattered clothes hang on wall.
Next on the tour is the Hanging Tree where 18 miners were hung for stealing.
The tour loops around to the Stamp Mill and wooden head frame of mine. The Glory Hole is next on the tour where the mine collapsed, killing 7 miners and 12 burros were sent to their glory.
The whole tour takes about 2-3 hours. The buildings are in pretty good shape considering their age. The old relics left behind are the most interesting. Like furniture made from dynamite boxes.
