Summary: The Titan Missile II is the largest missile ever built by the United States and it was used in the Cold War from the early 60s to the end of the Cold War in the 80s. The last Titan II was deactivated in 1987 according to an agreement with the USSR and other countries. This is the only Titan II left in existence from the 54 that used to stand ready pointed at unrevealed targets throughout the world. Frequently throughout the day, satellites from other countries take pictures of it from space to confirm that the hatch is frozen partially open so that it cannot be fired in accordance to the agreement. The Titan II is no longer active with live warheads.
During the tour, you will view the missile from top to bottom, tour the facility including the control room and learn to processes used in preparation for launch if the missiles were ever needed. 18 Titan II missiles were located around Tucson and 36 others were dispersed at two other U.S. locations.
Special Notes: You will have to walk down and up approximately 50 steps to get to the control center. If you are traveling with someone needing assistance, a small elevator is available. You will need a government issued picture ID since this is a government facility. Take water with you and sunglasses as you will be above ground during the tour for about 30 minutes. The rest of the time you will be underground. Hard hats are provided and cameras are welcome.

Julie Knapp,
Is this the same Julie Knapp that was at Mountain View High School in 1989?
