The current members of the MCCCD Governing Board have been tarnishing the district's reputation with their childish attitudes and irresponsible decisions for about a year now.
Ever since the board attempted to take control of the Scottsdale Chronicle last spring, it has been under much scrutiny from the community.
The final straw was the micro-management in administrative affairs, which could have threatened the district accreditation.
Thankfully we live in America, which means that if we are not satisfied with the performance of an elected official, we can vote for someone else.
This November, incumbent board member Jerry Walker is running for re-election against contesting candidate Dana Saar.
Walker is not singly responsible for all of the Board's problems; however, he has not been the solution to our problems either.
Walker is now in his sixth year as a board member.
As editors we believe that a new perspective is the solution to the governing board's problems. This is why we support Dana Saar in the upcoming election.
Saar says he will bring a new attitude to the governing board.
Instead of micro-managing each MCCCD college (as a committee requested by the Higher Learning Commission accused the board of doing), Saar said he believes that the board should only be used to make policy-making decisions.
While Saar is a newcomer to the district, he does offer more than a decade of experience serving on the governing board of the Fountain Hills Public School District.
It is time for this district to cut its losses and begin to move into this new decade with a board that can once again draw respect from its community and other colleges nationwide.
If we, as a community continue to elect the same officials, then we will continue to get the same unsatisfactory results from our governing board.
This editorial is the opinion of the Scottsdale Chronicle Editorial Board and not necessarily that of SCC or the district.
