On Nov. 7 the SCC volleyball team received its runner-up plaque for the 2009 Regional I Tournament.
Four out of seven teams in the division make it to regionals. Whichever team has the best record has the opportunity to host regionals. The Lady Artichokes obtained the number one seed in the division by finishing the season 13-3. Therefore, Scottsdale Community College hosted the 2009 Region I Volleyball Tournament.
“Its honor and a gift. Never take it for granted,” said head coach Regina Mannix.
The team has been working hard throughout the year, with two to three games per week, and practices in between.
“The players on the team have been working hard,” said Mannix. “They put in a lot of hours.”
As a result, the Lady Artichokes became the No. 1 seed for the regional tourney. The success of the team has benefited the players as well.
“The No. 1 seed is a great accomplishment; we’ve had two players make All-Conference and one player made Honorable Mention,” said Mannix.
Freshmen setter Taryn Salum, who received the Player of the Week award, gives credit to her team and coach for her playing ability.
“The Team has taught each other a lot. We all contribute something. Without one girl something would be missing,” said Salum. “My coach taught me a lot, she totally changed all my bad skills. She changed my attitude into being a perfectionist.”
All in all, the season has been a successful one in Mannix’s eyes.
“It’s been a great season, tremendous all around. We adjusted well to adversity I’m very proud to coach these ladies,” said Mannix.
Salum reiterated her coach’s thoughts.
“The season has been great, and it’s been a smooth ride. We’ve had little bumps but we’ve learned how to overcome those, we still move on,” Salum said.
The SCC volleyball team gives credit to those who helped them get to where they are.
“Everyone has contributed, our coach Regina Mannix, assistance coaches Brenna Klingenberg and Thom Barsch, our weight coaches, our athletic trainers Gregg and Tony who helped with injuries, our fans and parents,” said Salum. “Also Julia (an SCC Alumni), who has voluntarily helped the team, the athletic department men and women,” said Salum.
