March is Women’s History Month and SCC is hosting events across campus to recognize the value of women in the community.

The national theme this year is “Writing Women Back into History” and there is a writing contest open to students on this topic.  The deadline is March 12 and more information is available at the Language and Communication Division Office.

Director of Student Life and Leadership, Rebecca Bradley said, "Anytime there is an opportunity to celebrate accomplishment, it should be taken, even if one does not necessarily fit into that group."

Bradley is also assisting in the “Girls Fight Back” workshop, a national campaign coming to SCC  March 11, which will take place in  the Turquoise Room at 3 p.m.
“It is an interactive workshop about self-awareness, personal confidence and empowerment,” said Bradley.

SCC is designating “Grand Canyon Women: Lives Shaped by Landscape,” by Betty Leavengood as the book of the month.  Copies of the book are available at the SCC and the public library.

March 24 at 11:30 a.m. on the Center Green, a campfire meeting will take place for people to discuss the book.  Faculty members Marsha Ballard and David Brown will share their thoughts on the book as well.

SCC’s Women’s Leadership Group (WLG) will be coordinating a photo gallery of the women on campus in the Student Center foyer hallway.

WLG and the Connect Committee are also hosting a screening of “A Sense of Wonder:  Rachel Carson’s Love for the Natural World and Her Fight to Defend It,” March 23 in the Turquoise Room at 12:30 p.m.

SCC hosted the same screening last year and had a poor turnout, however, this year there is a national writing contest students can enter that goes along with the event that will hopefully attract more participants, said WLG co-representative at SCC, Barbara Bentz.

The festivities come to an end on April 2 at 9 a.m. with a garden planting in the administration courtyard put on by the WLG.

“We have a lot of female employees here on campus and it is important for us to have a way to network and communicate with each other,” said Bentz, adding that Women’s History month provides a defined time frame to remind women to connect.
